2 – Get Kids Off Screens The Right Way –
One Way Parents Can Fight the Phone Based Childhood
I’m not in the camp that kids should have no access to technology with screens, but it’s safe to say it is a problem. My 4 year old can act like an addict withdrawing if we give her too much time on our phone and then take it away from her. Her mood is remarkably different when she watches a movie vs plays with her dolls.
This article pushes the need for parents to create an environment where kids are safe to explore, play, and connect with others offline. Yes, screens are addicting, but kids also crave freedom that can be achieved in healthier ways than a virtual world.
Here is what we are doing to limit screen time and create a healthy environment –
- Meet at friends houses and let the girls play in different part of house. Yes, things have gotten broke, Someone has gotten a boo-boo, and you will have to clean up, but this free play has been huge in my daughters development.
- We buy a lot of arts/craft projects to give me daughter an option other than the screen.
- We get outside. Pool, walks through neighborhood, take her to gym to play with me, parks, etc.
- Limit evening TV to one time a week. We do movie night on Fridays. Typically paired with pizza.
3 – Fantasy Football is Back –
I am in a fantasy football league with some high school buddies. I’ve been doing it on and off for about the past 10 years. Last year was my first time winning it all. Bad luck was our washer went out the week after I got my winning cash so I didn’t buy anything fun.
Our draft is tonight. Good luck to all who are in a league…. BUT don’t let it take too much time away from things that matter. It’s not that serious.
And you’re out. Have a great week
Josh
